Detroit roads are genuinely tough on tires. Between the potholes, the heavy stop-and-go traffic, and the seasonal temperature swings that take rubber from frozen to scorching, a quality tire mounted and balanced correctly makes a real difference in how your vehicle handles, how long the tire lasts, and how safely it performs in wet or winter conditions.
New tire sales and installation is our core tire service. We'll help you select the right tire for your vehicle, driving habits, and budget, then mount and balance them on your wheels using precision balancing equipment. Proper balancing eliminates the vibration you feel through the steering wheel at highway speeds and ensures the tire wears evenly across its full width.
Tire rotation extends the life of your tires by moving them to different positions on the vehicle, balancing out the uneven wear patterns created by front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or the extra weight of the engine over the front axle. We recommend rotation every 5,000–7,500 miles and often perform it during oil changes to keep your maintenance in sync.
Flat tire repair is a service we handle quickly for Detroit drivers who roll in with a nail or screw in the tread. When the puncture is within the repairable zone, generally the center three-quarters of the tread, we perform a proper plug-and-patch repair that restores full inflation integrity. Sidewall damage is non-repairable and requires replacement. We'll give you an honest assessment so you're not paying for a new tire when a repair will safely do the job.
TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) service is frequently needed after new tire installation or a flat repair. The TPMS sensors inside your wheels need to be reset or replaced, and we have the proper tools to service every major system on the market.
Tire tread depth is the primary indicator of replacement need. New tires start at approximately 10/32" of tread depth. The legal minimum in Michigan is 2/32", but traction degrades significantly below 4/32", especially on wet roads. The classic quarter test: insert a quarter into a tread groove with Washington's head pointing down. If you can see the top of his head, you're at 4/32" and approaching replacement territory. Insert a penny instead: if Lincoln's entire head is visible, you're at or below 2/32" and the tire is legally worn out.
Beyond tread depth, look for sidewall cracking or bulging, uneven wear across the width of the tire, and age. Rubber degrades over time regardless of mileage. Most manufacturers recommend replacing tires that are more than 6–10 years old even if tread appears adequate. Bring your vehicle to East Side Auto Center for a free tire inspection and we'll give you the straight answer.
