Engine Diagnostics & Check Engine Light
That check engine light means your car is asking for help. We use advanced diagnostic tools to read fault codes accurately and explain exactly what they mean.
Learn MoreFrom fluid flushes to full transmission repairs, we service both automatic and manual transmissions. Early attention to shifting issues saves costly rebuilds later.
The transmission is one of the most expensive components on a vehicle to replace, and most transmission failures are preventable with timely fluid service and early attention to warning signs. At East Side Auto Center, we take transmission problems seriously and approach them systematically, from a routine fluid flush to diagnosis of complex shifting issues.
Detroit's stop-and-go traffic is particularly hard on automatic transmissions. Frequent acceleration and braking cycles generate heat in the transmission fluid, and heat is the primary cause of fluid degradation. When transmission fluid breaks down, it loses its protective properties, clutch packs wear faster, solenoids stick, and valve bodies begin to malfunction. Regular fluid maintenance is the single most effective way to extend transmission life.
Transmission fluid change and flush are the foundation of transmission maintenance. A drain-and-fill replaces the fluid in the pan, typically 30–50% of total fluid volume. A full transmission flush uses a machine to exchange 100% of the fluid including what's in the torque converter and cooler lines, providing a more thorough refresh. We use the manufacturer-specified fluid type for your transmission, which matters significantly. Using the wrong fluid formulation can cause shift quality problems and premature wear.
Transmission filter replacement accompanies the fluid service on vehicles equipped with a serviceable filter. A clogged filter restricts fluid flow to the valve body, causing sluggish response and pressure-related shifting faults.
Shift quality diagnosis covers the wide range of problems that manifest as slipping, rough shifts, delayed engagement, or failure to shift into certain gears. Using our scan tools to read transmission fault codes and live transmission data, including line pressure, solenoid duty cycles, and input and output shaft speeds, we identify whether the problem is electronic (a sensor or solenoid), hydraulic (a valve body issue), or mechanical (internal clutch pack or band wear).
Clutch service for manual transmissions is another area of our expertise. We replace clutch discs, pressure plates, throw-out bearings, and resurface or replace flywheels. A properly adjusted clutch with fresh components transforms the driving feel of a manual transmission vehicle.
Some transmission symptoms are urgent. A transmission that slips out of gear unpredictably, refuses to shift into drive or reverse, or makes grinding and banging noises needs attention before the next Detroit commute. Continued driving with these symptoms can turn a repairable condition into a total rebuild or replacement. Bring your vehicle to East Side Auto Center for an honest assessment. We'll tell you exactly what's happening, what it will take to fix it, and what the alternatives are.
